There are some basic elements of good interior space design you should consider. They all play a critical role in how a space is perceived and used. Colour, Lighting and Space. Colour- has an enormous influence on your room’s look and feel; do you need your space to be peaceful, quirky, airy or cosy ? Effective use of lighting can make your room more functional and create different atmosphoeres. Consider low, medium and high level lighting to achieve different looks as well as the type of bulb used to give white or warm lighting. Consider the function of the space as well as its size and height.

Mirrors

Hang large mirrors on walls to expand a space and brighten the room from the light that will be reflected, but be sure that the mirror reflects an attractive image - a view, painting, not a blank space or clutter! A large mirror in a small room creates the illusion of depth, so don’t be scared to be bold. Placing a big mirror on the wall above a dining room table to reflect the chandelier, or installing a mirror across from a beloved piece of artwork looks amazing.

If you have a really narrow hall or corridor, a smaller, horizontal mirror or circular mirror works well as this will act to widen the space, which creates a flow from room to room. Installing lots of different sized mirrors to double the visual width of the space is an interesting focal point. A large leaning mirror against a wall in a hallway or dressing room can also dress a space up beautifully.

De-cluttering

If you want to refurbish a room; take out all the clutter to see what kind of space you really have to work with; this includes pictures, rugs, lamps, small tables, plants, throws etc- so you can see the main furniture. Then you can move everything around and see what options you have with your existing furniture or whether you need to change some items - you might just need to change the accessories to create a fabulous new look.
